Like every country, Thailand is a country that has its own cuisine but you can also find Western foods such as McDonald’s who have 138 stores in Thailand alongside other franchises that become the home to many tourists.
However, I always find myself leaning towards trying new foods. When visiting a country as magnificent as Thailand, why eat foods that you find at home where there is a country you are in that has a completely different cuisine and different recipes waiting to be discovered.
In this blog, I will discuss some authentic Thai dishes that you must try when visiting this paradise of a country.
Tom Kha Gai (Chicken in Coconut Soup)
Tom Kha Gai is a popular soup in Thailand. This soup is made with coconut milk with chicken mixed in a pan to create a unique taste.
The Kha is galangal. Galangal is often compared to ginger due to the element of spice it brings to your dish. In this dish, there is often lime used to provide a citrus element to enhance the dish.
The flavour of the dish is immense! The coconut and the galangal compliment an element of spice which allows people to enjoy food with some spice without the spice overwhelming the dish.
It is important to know that this dish is eaten more like curry as opposed to a soup as you dip the chicken soup onto your rice and eat it.
Som Tam (Spicy Green Papaya Salad)
Som Tam is a dish that originated in Northern Thailand. There are many variations of this dish but the traditional Thai version consists of shredded green papaya, tomatoes, palm sugar, tamarind pulp, fish sauce, lime juice, garlic and red chilis.
Thai people sometimes add extra ingredients such as dried shrimps and peanuts to magnify the flavour.
Som Tam has flavours that work well together to give a piquancy feel to the dish. The spice of the chillis works with the sweetness of the palm salt to work as a hot dish that is also sweet and sour.
In Thailand, Thai people love to eat this classic dish with sticky rice and the advantage of this dish that there is always street vendors that sell this dish.
Pad Thai (Thai Style Fried Noodles)
Where can I start with this delightful dish? Pad Thai is regarded as the national dish of Thailand and is at the top of my all-time favourite dishes.
This dish consists of fried noodles which are usually made with shrimp or chicken. Pad Thai is a good combination of the classic ingredients that are used in Thailand.
The ingredients make the dish sour with the shrimp. Thai people often add fish sauce to this dish to give it a unique taste but the lime juice that is added makes the dish slightly acidic.
This superb dish is very easily found in Thailand and using this dish as an introduction to Thai food is advised as it shows the uniqueness of Thai food.
Overall, it would most definitely advise trying Thai food. This is because it comes with unique flavours and eating foods from different cultures and countries most definitely put you on a path to food glory!
